There is so much to be learned from your fellow readers at 365lessthings. There are as many great tips and ideas and encouragement that goes on in the comments section as there is in the posts themselves. But if you don’t have the time to read them all every Friday I am happy to choose five that I would want you to miss. Here are this week’s five…

My five post picks for the week. This week I have chosen five blogs at random via google search. I was quite impressed with what I found.
Rogue Priest ~ The-fallout-of-minimalism
Pearl ~ The Stuff Diaries-Moving-frugality-and minimalism
MiniMOMism ~ Eco-friendly minimalism
The Minimalists ~ Giving is living
Donation Town blog ~ Another good USA/Canadian source for having your donations picked up at your door.
Today’s Declutter Item
It’s déjà vu all over again. More baseball clutter out the door. This one had a run in with a three year old and the only place for it was in the bin
My Gratitude List
- Something that made me laugh ~ The silly things my friend Amber and I come out with at times.
- Something Awesome ~ Fast food coupons – I enjoyed a free coffee and a free sub today.
- Something to be grateful for ~ Feeling a whole lot better today than I did the two days before ~ headache all gone.
- Something that made me happy ~ Mariners 10 ~ Detroit 1
- Something I found fascinating ~ How as you get older time seems to pass quicker.

What I caught my interest today (or, this week) was the flat surface rule: when a flat surface (table, top of a closet, and… the floor) has something on it, it is instantly cluttered. A kitchen top (and other flat surfaces) is not to store stuff (or clutter), but to prepare food. Interesting, huh?

And I remember now (while I was browsing yesterday’s post about going Slow & Steady) a story about a turtle and a hare.
The hare and the turtle were going to race. The hare bragged about outrunning the turtle. The turtle replied: “We shall see”. And so, the race begins. The hare blazed through the race, but halfway he saw a very nice field, filled with flowers. The hare thought that he could take a nap, because the turtle was so slow… And so he took a nap. After a while, he woke up. He ran to the finish, and guess what? The turtle wun! During the nap the hare took, the turtle kept on walking and was so, the turtle was faster than the hare.

Hi Nurchamiel,
that is the way the story goes alright. You will notice that even though the hare was faster his two fast and furious efforts only put him back at square one ~ have run the race without any reward for his efforts. He probably would like to do the race over again and hope for a better result. While the tortoise went about the race slowly and steadily, deliberate in his purpose and in the end won. He has no need at all to do the race over again for a better result.

Hi Nurchamiel,
you may have guessed by now that I am a little bit of a tidy freak and nothing sits on a flat surface for long in my house. Even when it is there (out of place) for a reason I am usually itching to put it right. So this comes as no surprise to me but it is interesting to have a label for it.

My pleasure 🙂

Colleen, thank you sooooooo much for the link to Rogue Priest. I had not heard of this blog before, and now I am enjoying it quite a bit!

Hi Liina,
I am going to have to go back over there and take a better look myself. In my spare time that is. 🙄

I’m working on decluttering, slowly and surely. I got out my hemming tape and ironed it onto the shorts I was hemming. Frustrating stuff, isn’t working. Upon closer inspection, I saw it was manufactured in 1969. I inherited it with all sorts of other sewing stuff when my grandmother died in 1995. Oops. Just a reminder to myself that hanging onto stuff we have for “one day” isn’t always a good thing!! Think I’ll be getting rid of some other sewing stuff this week!! Love your blog… it’s a great inspiration!

And I’m a different Lynn… meant to change my name before I posted!

Hi Lynn,
I have done a post about this before (here). My husband’s job moves our little family around a bit and every other move has involved putting half our belongings in storage for several years. I have lost so many items to the fact that they sat unused for so long including my wonderful Kenwood mixer. So I am only too aware of this problem.
